James Bassi is a versatile musician: composer pianist, and music director. He has played concerts for a variety of artists, including opera stars Deborah Voigt and Jessye Norman, cabaret singers Ute Lemper and Tovah Feldschuh. His compositions have been heard at major venues including Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. His music has been performed by noted artists such as Judy Collins and Frederica von Stade, as well as the Orchestra of St. Luke's and Voices of Ascension. Mr. Bassi has received composition grants from NEA, Meet-The-Composer, and New York Foundation for the Arts. His music publisher is Oxford University Press.​

A Certain Slant of Light was premiered December 3, 2016 by the Stonewall Chorale, the commissioning organization. The piece is scored for chorus and string orchestra, using texts by Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson

and William Blake.
